About Us

EU Welcome is a project of the Portsmouth Roman Catholic Diocese http://www.portsmouthdiocese.org.uk/ UK Registered Charity 246871

WHAT DO WE DO?

EU Welcome exists to provide help and support to migrants in the Southampton area from EU and other European countries.

We seek to empower our clients to to overcome the challenges of living in a foreign country, by promoting the learning of English and the understanding of British culture.

We are prepared to try to offer help in any area of life, and much of our work involves signposting to other agencies and ensuring that those agencies understand the needs of EU clients.

We work flexibly and are generally contacted through telephone or internet but we also hold regular 'drop in' advice sessions throughout the city.

We are particularly keen to help people who have housing difficulties and who face possible homelessness, and we work closely with agencies that work with 'street homeless' people. We also support victims of domestic violence helping them to access available services.

We help people access employment that reflects their qualifications, training and passions.

We wish to ensure that all clients understand their rights in the UK, and can play their part to make Southampton an even better place in which to live and work.

WHO WE HELP?

We assist the Polish, Czech, Slovak, Estonian, Slovenian, Hungarian, Lithuanian, Latvian, as well as Romanian, Bulgarian and Russian speaking communities.

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY...

EU Welcome began in 2004 as a joint initiative between Southampton City Council's 'New Communities Team' and The City Centre Catholic Parish of Southampton.

The aim was to give support to migrant workers from the new countries of the European Union, to aid integration and to provide good quality information.

Dave Adcock was appointed a project worker in July 2005, and Anna Marcickiewicz began officially working for the project in January 2007 after serving as a volunteer for the previous year. In September 2009 she was replaced by Aneta Sochan.

From 2010, Anna Krzywicka and Adriana Conroy are both employed part-time to work with Polish speaking people. Some of their work involves supporting those who find themselves homeless, and victims of domestic violence, but they are also available to offer advice and signposting to anyone who contacts them.

Iga is a qualified as a psychologist in Poland, and is able to offer a limited amount of emotional support and advice to people going through difficult situations.

Ana T speaks Russian and Lithuanian, and is available to support speakers of those languages.  Please note that she only works a few hours per week for EU Welcome so we'd ask those who contact her to be patient.

We also have volunteers who help us with other EU communities. Please contact Dave in the first instance.
